Hendrikje Lange - Switzerland

Hendrikje Lange

Hendrikje Lange first encountered the Korean "hourglass drum" janggu in Switzerland in 1994. In 1996, after seeing a performance of Kim Duk-Soo's Samulnori Hanullim she began steadily learning samulnori as a hobby. From 1997 until 2010 every year she participated in the samulnori workshop with Professor Kim Dong-Won (Wongkwang Digital University in Korea) at the Basel Academy of Music, where she learned Yeongnam Nongak, Samdo Seoljanggu, Utdari Nongak, Pilbong Nongak and Gyeonggi-do Danggut. In 1999, she visited Korea in order to learn at the Buyeo area Samulnori Hanullim School. After that, every year she went to visit Korea. In 2001, she was a founding member of the Swiss women's samulnori team 'Swissamul'. The Swissamul team participated several times in the World Samulnori Competition in Korea and in 2008 won First Place in the foreigners' division.

In 2010 she moved to Korea to study samulnori on a professional level. In 2011 she was selected as a participant of the CPI Cultural Partnership Program, run by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and studied janggu and Korean folk songs (minyo) at the Korean National Gugak Center in Seoul. In 2012, she was accepted as the first Western student to the department of Korean Traditional Perfoming Arts under leadership of master drummer Kim Duk-Soo at the Korean National University of Arts, where she learned the shaman piece Gyeonggi Dodanggut with master Kim Duk-Soo and received ggwaenggwari and janggu lessons from Kim Bok-Man. She also studied Seol Janggu dance (in the lineage of Yang Do-Il) with dancer and drummer Pak Eun-Ha as well as learning Pilbong Nongak.

In 2016 Hendrikje returned to Switzerland. She continues to support Expats Samulnori from overseas and has performed with them when she visits Korea.

Gaia Brusasco

In fall 2013 and spring 2014 Gaia took the Janggu Class for Foreigners at the Korean National Gugak Center. In summer 2014, winter 2015, and summer 2015 she attended the Samulnori Hanullim School in Buyeo. She joined the Expats Samulnori team in winter 2014 and has enjoyed practicing and performing with them ever since. Although percussion and samulnori are Gaia's primary interests, she also enjoys studying other forms of Korean traditional performance such as gayageum, pansori, and dance.

Ellen Funderburg - USA

Ellen Funderburg

Ellen first became interested in traditional Korean drumming after witnessing several impressive performances at the 2012 Yeosu Exposition. The following year, she began taking the Saturday Janggu Class for Foreigners at the Korean National Gugak Center. Since then, she has attended summer and winter camps at the Samulnori Hanullim School in Buyeo as well as beginning to study under the members of the Samulnori Yeonpung team in Asan in 2015.

She joined the Expats Samulnori team in 2014, and in 2016 she became a member of the newly-created Nori team in Asan with other students of the Yeonpung teachers.

Laura Stan - Romania

Laura Stan

Laura fell in love with samulnori in 2014, while attending a 3 day samulnori workshop in Romania. She loved it so much that the same year she created Pureun Narae, the first Romanian Samulnori Team, which continues to be active. Since then she has participated in various workshops organized in Europe and Korea by Kim Duk-Soo's Hanullim organization.

After coming to study in Korea in the Korean Governement Scholarship Program, she played janggu as a member of the Pungmulnori Association of Chosun University in Gwangju, Jeollanamdo and took the National Theater's janggu class.

Laura was very excited to become a part of the Expats Samulnori team in autumn of 2018.

Noriko Ohkusa - Japan

Noriko Ohkusa

Noriko started to perform the Korean & Japanese fusion dance “Yosakoi Arirang” in 2004 in Japan with the team “Hanakorea”. The team sometimes collaborates with samulnori teams, so she discovered samulnori through dance.

Noriko moved to Korea in 2017 and took a class in gayageum at the Korean National Gugak Center in the spring of 2018. Because of her interest in Korean traditional instruments and music, she continues to learn gayageum and joined Expats Samulnori team with her husband in 2018. Since then, she has been learning samulnori with joy.
